Lesson 2: The IRS and Protecting PII

Ever feel like there are too many acronyms in our industry? Well, prepare to meet another one: the IRS! Just kidding, of course, we all know and love the Internal Revenue Service (or at least, we know them).

The IRS is a U.S. government agency responsible for the administration of the tax laws enacted by Congress. But did you know that they also play a key role in protecting PII data in our industry?

That’s right! The IRS isn’t just about collecting taxes and making our lives just a tad more stressful around April. They also establish essential regulations for protecting PII data in tax, accounting, and CPA firms. They are like the super heroes of data protection, swooping in to save the day with their regulations and guidelines!

Now, don’t get confused with other agencies like the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), or FCC (Federal Communications Commission). While they all do important work (like ensuring the safety of our food, protecting our environment, and regulating our communications), when it comes to PII data protection in our industry, the IRS is our go-to agency.

So, let’s give a big round of applause to the IRS! They’re not just about taxes; they’re also about keeping our clients’ data safe and secure!
